The Libertarian National Anthem: A Musical Two Fingers to the State

Sung Live and Loud to Make the Statists Squirm.

I am just back from Oslo where I was performing at the Norwegian Libertarian Party’s annual shindig. What a great place Norway is. You must go.

Anyway, the event prompted me to post this video.

I have been known to invite audiences to sing the National Anthem at the start of my gigs.

Here is one magnificent example.

I hope it fills you with pride on this sunny afternoon.

I particularly loved the moment where the crowd sings, as one, “taxation is a form of theft”.

What’s your favourite line? (Tell me in the comments).

Why that choice of music? Partly for the obvious irony of having what was originally composed as the Hymn of the Bolshevik Party promote Libertarian sentiments. Partly because it’s a brilliant piece of music. But mainly because it’s out of copyright!

Shows Coming Up

It’s all about the big one now on May 20 in London. Just three weeks away. Can’t wait. The Mid-Year Review.

Have you got your tickets?

This is going to be such a good night.

Otherwise it’s:

Lyrics

These took me longer to write than any lyric ever. Months - I’m not kidding. Every day for months I would spend hour after hour trying to get libertarian sentiments to fit Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov’s music, and not miss anything out. It was like a endlessly complex puzzle. Anyway, I think I got there.

I have been told I should release them into the public domain. Do you think I should? I must confess I’m torn.

National Anthem of Libertaria
(to the music of the Hymn of the Bolshevik Party)

Arise libertarians
Above totalitarians.
Our guide is the mighty Invisible Hand.
Reject state controllers, collectors, patrollers.
Our choices are better than government plans.

Taxation is a form of theft.
Free markets and free trade are best.
Free speech, free movement, free minds and free choice.
Our actions are all voluntary
Not coerced or compulsory.
War we abhor.
Socialism does not work.

No debt or inflation,
No stealth confiscation
No pigs in the trough at the gravy to drink.
No state education to brainwash our nation
No experts dictate what to do, what to think.

We scorn you fiat currency
Gold and bitcoin is our money
We own ourselves, and we live and let live.
We take responsibility
Life, love and liberty
Leave us alone.
Let a thousand flowers bloom!

Of all the tracks I have written, the National Anthem is the most listened to on Spotify. Funny.

On that note, hang it: “I hereby release the above lyrics into the public domain.” I’ve done it now. Think of all the royalties I am going to lose out as a result.

Here’s the original video, by Goat, which we made during Lockdown. This was a fookton of work too.

Enjoy!

And don’t forget to book your tickets to the Backyard!
